But what should it be? What little niche of the (possibly automotive) universe of knowledge should I ceaselessly plumb, becoming an annoying, monomaniacal firehose of unwanted knowledge to those around me?

Maybe you should consider learning how to rebuild and set up carbs? It’s an endangered skill as carburettor magicians from older generations start getting exceedingly rare. You could also bore ordinary people to death with the mere mention of your newly acquired skill.

Driver side mirrors. Learn everything about them for every make and model. If someone has a question about a passenger side mirror, explain that it is a different subject entirely and you really don’t know much about them.

This. Absolutely this. Cheap and fun. They’re quite literally miniature cars that you can drive, work on, and geek out with.

Absolutely! So much fun! Its just as fun to work on and mod as they are to drive. The good ones, have handling characteristics of a real car.

I don’t know if I’d really qualify them as cheap, they can get expensive fairly quick. Of course not as much as owning a car, but you could definitely buy a cheap beater for what RC cars can end up costing you. haha

Mine was $200 and is a ton of fun, especially in the snow this weekend. I don’t think you could find a good running car for that. However, a 65 MPH Traxxas E-Revo is something like $700 but is probably more fun than any car under $2000.
Edit: just checked Traxxas’ website and an E-Revo Brushless is $800 but is still totally awesome.

The various types of ignition distributors with points, and how to set them. Almost totally useless, but potentially satisfactorily technical.
